Our convent–Benedictine Venio Abbey–is a community of women who look for God. Our way of life is based on a very old tradition that stems from the way of life of early Christians and the example of fathers and mothers of early monasticism. We combine the Rule of St Benedict from the 6th century, which is grounded in the Scripture, with contemporary world and life.
Words as “site of pilgrimage” or “mountain” (which is the meaning of the Czech word “hora” in the name of our locality “Bílá Hora”, i.e. “White Mountain”) have connotations of wider perspective and deeper insight. They offer a view from above and understanding the context. They free us from long-held assumptions, help us (at least for a while) put aside today’s troubles and dead wood of past decades and centuries which is associated with this place. Concurrently with efforts to revive the site of pilgrimage it became evident that we want to deal intensively with its history and perception in the past and present and with ecumenical cooperation.
We run a house for guests and pilgrims. It is located on the boundary of two worlds–a city and a convent. Its past is as colourful as lives of those who look for a retreat, for some rest, recovery of body, spirit and soul here.
